School of Sport

  • Glasgow School of Sport is the only designated National Centre of Excellence for Sport in Scotland
  • It is housed at Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow and welcomes applications from talented young sports people of secondary school age (12-18years)
  • Entry is by selection only with three entry points available: S1, S3 and S5/S6
  • 1 in every 6 pupils at Bellahouston Academy is a sports pupil specialising in one of five core sports; athletics, badminton, gymnastics, hockey and swimming.

  • The Glasgow School of Sport was set up in 1999 and is funded by the Scottish Government.
  • It is run as a partnership between Education Services Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life
  • It in an integral part of the academic and sport performance pathways working with schools, clubs, colleges, universities, National Governing Bodies and area institutes to support its young talented athletes
  • The School of Sport is a founder member of the European Athlete as Student, an international network dedicated to combining sport with education

Talented Athlete Support

  • Sports pupils enjoy free access to all programmes and services
  • Sports pupils have individualised training programmes developed and delivered by a high performance coaching team of sports specific and strength and conditioning experts
  • Purpose built sports facilities on site at the school comprise a 6 court badminton hall / indoor hockey court and strength and conditioning gym
  • School of Sport minibuses transport pupils to nearby world class sports facilities
  • Pupils access a range of support services including injury diagnosis and rehabilitation, fitness testing and travel support between home and school

Academic courses

  • High performance sports training is integrated with academic studies
  • Sports pupils follow a modified curriculum with reduced time in non core subjects allowing more time to be spent on sport
  • Additional flexibility is offered in the senior school with sports pupils able to choose between more intensive academic or sport timetables
  • Pupils benefit from supported study arrangements including time off school to attend competition and training camps
  • A programme of Sport Education provides senior students with the opportunity to gain sports leadership, health, fitness and coaching awards accredited by SQA
